Not a Burton fan, not a Depp fan, but I LOVE this movie.
I may stand alone here, but I've never really understood the appeal of Johnny Depp, nor have I ever particularly enjoyed any other Tim Burton film. This one however is one of my favorites. While I may not be a Tim Burton fan, what I love ABOUT his films is that nothing is ever random. Nothing is without reason or purpose. Every blade of grass, speck of dust, drop of rain, every cloud is intentionally placed and meant to be seen WHERE it was placed, whether seen consciously or subconsciously.
Particularly regarding Sleepy Hollow, I love that this movie has the dark foreboding mood of a timeless horror film, and at the same time, it has all the nostalgic feel of the classic Disney story of Ichabod Crane, to which you will find subtle references here (the twisted trees, the fiery Jack-o-Lantern). Yet even in its fairy tale setting, the camera never shies away from the morbid detail of severed heads and headless bodies, shown in lingering, well lit, close up detail.
No drugs, no tits, no out-of-place slapstick comedy and no annoying rock or rap music. It's about time we got a horror movie without them. And it's been too long since.
