what does calling someone cornbread imply?

It's obviously a racist term, since Shaft accuses Looger of being a nazi with a badge right after. But how is the word supposed to be a racist remark towards black people?

reply

Stereotypically, black people enjoy making, buying, and eating cornbread.

reply

lol, how can anyone find that offensive?

reply

It's a good comeback if some black guy ever calls you cracker. You may want to be prepared to fight though.

reply

We're not, are we?

Cracker refers to the whip cracker.

Not this Black person (myself). I can't stand cornbread.

reply

Even if black people loves cornbread it's silly to call one the name of the food item. Like, replace it with "fried chicken" and it will be even funnier. "Yea fuck you too, fried chicken!" Or with "watermelon." "Fuck you too, watermelon!" Hmmn... Sounds kinky!

What's next?Calling a Russian, "Fuck you too, vodka!" And a Japanese, "Fuck you too, sushi!" It didn't make any sense.

reply

"Cornbread" is more amusing than "fried chicken" or "watermelon." The other two are just lame.

reply

So do white people.

reply

i thought it had a double meaning-- yes, black people love cornbread, but also the guy's hair was braided in cornrows... so i thought it was like, a diss you know? calling his cornrows 'cornbread'....

cedric maxwell was called cornbread during his career. after some research (i thought larry bird gave it to him, but i guess he just continued it) here is the explanation on wikipedia (everything on there is true, right?)

Maxwell received the nickname "Cornbread" from his college teammate Melvin Watkins after the pair went to see the movie Cornbread, Earl and Me, in which a 12-year-old boy is traumatized by the murder of his friend, a star basketball player. Watkins thought that Maxwell looked like the title character (played by Keith Wilkes) and so began calling him "Cornbread". Since Maxwell did not like the nickname, it did not gain widespread use until Maxwell was named MVP of the NIT tournament in 1976, when, according to Watkins, "The New York media picked up on [the nickname]."

does that answer your question, probably not. But just an interesting tidbit.

reply

Cornbread was the nickname of the star basketball player who murdered by the police when they mistake him for a suspect their chasing who's wearing a similar grey hoodie. Maybe he was making a referential humor to the movie because the man in custody was pleading his innocent by mistaken identity.

reply

Thats not true, not all black people love cornbread!

reply

With or without watermelons?

reply

of course they do!

They wash it down with some grape soda and then knock boots with a morbidly obese white woman.

reply

Just an idea: perhaps he's calling him cornBRED, thereby implying he was raised on a farm = backwards in his opinion.

HTH

reply

yes cornbread implies a black person, just as beaner implies a mexican.

reply

You're right. Cornbred really isn't a racial slur, it implies that the person was raised on a farm (i.e. country).

reply

No it's not at least not in this movie. He called him cornbread because he was black plain and simple. It is a stereotype just like that black guys love fried chicken. The entire movie is filled with little racist comments all around because thats how the original movies were.

reply

Pick a random word in the dictionary, call a black person that word, and they will think you are being racist.

reply

i mistook a peice of lemon cake for corn bread one time and was very disappointed, thats the day learned never to judge a person by the color of their skin.

reply

Are you saying that a lot of people who look black, aren’t black? What on earth does cake have to do with “judg[ing] a person by the color of their skin”?

reply

I'm white. I like Fried Chicken. What're we gonna do about that? 

reply

Hell, I'm Irish, don't drink, only way I like potatoes is as fries or chips, and I LOVE fried chicken, and waffles provided there's Log Cabin maple syrup. Sometimes a lot of people like certain foods...cause they're GOOD.

reply

It's because, in the South, blacks loved cornbread. So it become sorta an insult. Not Northern black people, as they love McDonald's and rice and etc.
McDonald's would be for Northern blacks
Cornbread and fried chicken would be Southern blacks

reply

So looger got called a Nazi-- he didn't get mad or call the news to report it.

The white guy got called a Cracker-- and he wasn't offended and could care less. He did call the local news station and report it. Jesus Christ I've been called names before and I could care less! My grandfather was a Cajun cook and his nickname for me was cornbread and I wasnt offended. This world we live in looks for any reason to cry Racist. I mean look at post about making James Bond Black. Then someone suggested making Shaft White, but that's being racist according to some people? How theF uck is it ok for Bond to be Black but Shaft can't be White? Where's the fairness in that??

How about if the mini series Roots gets re-made but using an all White cast??
