Why was her first son taken away?

I have seen most of this movie from right after she gives birth to just after half way home when Willie comes home from the war and starts his own family.

I'm sure I missed it, but why did Flora's family get rid of her son and why did she have to leave? Did they sell the child or just give him away?

I was very confused and have not been able to make sense of it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

The Flemings took him away. So you haven't seen it from the very beginning? Flora goes to work for The Flemmings. Young Master Flemming (played by Shemar Moore) comes looking for her to take care of his Nana. He is very charming but the other maids and servants know his true nature. At night he woos Flora making her feel special, treating her differently in the day of course b/c she is a servant and he is only using her. They end up making love and Flora gets pregnant. Flora gets fired, the servant saying, "Mass Lincoln had enough a you." They take her back to her house and on the night the baby was born they show up and Mass Lincoln intimidates them into giving him up. He says things to Flora's father like you can't provide, with so much high yellow blood he'll be an embarassment, and how they work on his farm. To be frank the parents basically just took the baby right away and gave it to the lady who came a few hours later, wasnt much she could do except holler and scream for her baby. She even had to leave town and they said if she ever tried to see him, they would hurt her.

You should try to see the beginning, there are some other things I left out that would put it in better prespective.

Wait, so you haven't seen the end either? You really must, they talk about it again.

You're certainly welcome. Looking back, I hope you understood everything. I was rushing a bit. I actually got the dvd a few years back for about $6 from Best Buy.

Rest in Peace, Teena Marie. You will be missed.

I have just viewed this film. What I don't understand is why Shemar Moore took the baby. Did he want to keep it? Did he want to raise it? And what does 'too much high yeller mean".

Sorry if this sounds rude but I really don't know what he meant when he said that. If he was an inconsiderate bastard and didn't care for Flora, why on earth would he want her kid?

Thanks much if anyone can clear this up.

I'm no expert on these things, so I may not be exactly right on this but I'll tell you how I saw it.

First thing to remember is that there is a sort of hierarchy, well there was in the black community. Lighter blacks were often treated better and thought of more highly. They were more likely to get education and opportunities. Not all of them of course, other well off blacks could get opportunities as well but in general lighter skin was preferred.

Blacks like The Flemings (rich etc) would marry only other blacks with light complexions. It was about status. "Too much high yellow" means the baby wouldn't fit in. High yellow is a term used to describe blacks with very light complexions. They couldn't pass for white but they looked different than most other blacks.

Second thing to remember is that class and society rules were very much in order. So in general keeping up appearances was of the utmost importance.

I imagine the Flemings were slaveowners at one point during slavery (being referred to as "Mass Lincoln") or took advantage afterward with sharecropping, but even then they had to have money beforehand. So they were upper class, had respect, were an established family.

But they were not white. This was young Fleming's son. His blood (good blood in his eyes) was running through the babies' veins. He did feel that Flora was low class and he would never marry her but I don't think he thought that she was subhuman as a white man in his position probably would have. It might be me just projecting my own hopes on the situation but even though he looked down on her I think he felt a connection, however trivial, to the son.

So to answer your question yes, he did want the baby, though not necessarily because he loved him. I think most of all it was a sense of obligation, a duty. Everyone would know that was Flora's baby and what would it look like if he didn't take care of it? I was also thinking he might have wanted an heir, so to speak. I'm thinking the reason Flora had to leave was because it was an embarrassment to have gotten her pregnant, and they knew she would want to see the baby. Almost like they were trying to erase her from memory.

With all of this I hope I gave you a better understanding of it.

Rest in peace Sullivan Walker. A distinguished, underappreciated, talented actor and a lovely man.

Flora's parents were intimidated and told that the land and house they lioved in would be taken away if they did not give up the baby. Flora wanted her baby.

Yes, I know that Flora WANTED her baby, but I wanted to know why Lincoln Flemming took the baby. Did he raise it in his house? That much was never indicated.
