It takes a lot of searching to find out about Walter's trials (and there were quite a few!).
There were several cases related to his 'dealings' that indicated he was shady to begin with.
One of the cases I read, was that Walter had claimed several miles of land somewhere in the desert and opened a brothel there. Apparently Walter had already known well in advance that the land belonged to someone already, but because the land was based in an area where no 'written laws' were in practice, he'd assumed that he was legally bullet proof. When real owner of the land started taking legal action against Walter, Walter arranged for three acquaintances to torch the place to the ground (with his staff still inside) in an attempt to shuck the charges whilst intending to claim insurance (as far as I know, all the staff made it out alive) . The whole thing led to about half a decade worth of huge court battles with charges of attempted murder, insurance fraud, arson, and running an illegal operation.
While the filming for the film was going on, he was also on trial with the state of Nevada because the ranch was on the limits of Pahrump where prostitution is illegal.
Later, he was on trial for connection with the murder of three girls ( who I believe were former employees)? He was in prison awaiting trial for this crime and died I think it was a day or two before he was supposed to go to court (of a heart attack).
You'll find stuff about him if you google his name (Walter Plankinton).
