I think in the end when Chuck is deciding what to do, he's attracted to the isolation of the farm just as much or even more than he is attracted to the woman Bettina. He still wants to be isolated in the middle of nowhere. He's used to it and maybe misses it, so the farm is his new island.

Im not sure if he liked isolation but he was overwhelmed by all the people and attention. Also he had just lost the love of his life. Now he can start over in a quieter setting with the bettina woman

Whatever his reasons, the similarity between the farm and the island really struck me.The farm is a perfect place for him.

shareI agree with this. I don't think he misses the island, per se, but he's used to solitude and likely having a hard time adjusting to being back in civilization and surrounded by people again. It's probably a lot of pressure after being in isolation for four years. So he probably would prefer the tranquility of a rural life.
