A Masterpiece!

It makes me sad hearing that such-and-such million people saw "Pirates of the Carrabean" or "The Lord of the Rings" last weekend, while a film like this is only limited to art houses. "Nowhere in Africa" was the best film of 2003, and whenever I tell that to people, they squint their eyes and say, "I haven't heard of that film! What is it?"

The language barrier is perhaps too great for many; even my mother, god bless her, doesn't like viewing foreign films because of difficulties keeping up with subtitles. But this movie is so extraordinary that you really don't have to pay that much attention to the words; the images are so arresting and unforgettable that the story flows along just the same.

So as we Americans go along and spend $300 million on the latest mindless romantic comedy or dumb thriller, another opportunity to see this modern masterpiece goes down the drain.

Perhaps this would be a more lamentable view were it not for the fact that most people prefer not to be challenged when they pay for entertainment, which is exactly what they can get from those other films. Yes, the art house can offer tremendous opportunities and scope for self growth and noone should be forced to engage in these actvities. Ultimately, if you choose not to open yourself up to these experiences and ideas, then perhaps you are undeserving of them to begin with. Let people choose for themselves and do not judge the validity of their choice. That only leads to more 'isms' and brick walls when we would rather have tolerance and open-mindedness. Personally I can enjoy both ends of the spectrum, as long as I am aware of the reasons for which I enjoy them.

I couldn't agree with you more, this movie belongs to my all time favorites.

Yeah, Hero with Jet Li was also a very good foreign film this year.

Nowhere in Africa is a great movie, I agree. But whenever I start thinking as you have above I watch Sullivan's Travels.
