Question about the scale at the VERY end (Spoilers)

At the very end, it is revealed that the fishery of Japan could not decipher what kind of fish the scale came from. Could this be hinting to the painter's schizophrenia, therefore the fish scale not existing? Something in my mind tells me that the scale is NOT real. Thanks!

More then likely one of those devices that gets the viewer to "think" about the movie rather then to just go hmmmmm, well whats on sportcenter.

I don't think it is anything more then a discussion point or a bit of a twist.

If you accept as fact that the fish scale cannot be identified, why would you even say that the fish scale doesn't exist?
