Call me stupid but . . .

When Bren asked Anita if she knew she was pregnant, Anita said she couldn't really tell her properly at the time and I don't think - apart from knowing who the baby's dad was - we ever found out any more about Anita's pregnancy.
Did she know she was pregnant or not?

I know this is probably a really obvious question but I've never been able to get my head round it exactly.

Thats always bothered me too, but I guess the mystery adds to the charm of dinnerladies. i think she defintiely didn;t know about the pregnancy as that would support the whole 'Anita is a dunce' idea that is rammed down our throats each episode. She talked about the baby being stuck behind her ribs and so that suggests that she didn't know either.

Maybe Victoria Wood was gonna have a scene where Anita explains to Bren about but then she realsied that that wasn't funny enough. Though can't imagine Victoria being unable to make something funny.

Doesn't Twink say something about who the father was when she says 'just once ,they did it', and it was in the back of his van or something.

She does and she refers to the 'dark' apprentice from the first episode that Anita and him were keen on each other. Twink calls him 'dark,' not me, I am not a racist!

i would have thought she must have known she was pregnant how else did she get a brand new car seat, nappies etc late on millenium new years eve. everywhere would have been shut unless we weren't supposed to notice that.

reply

She actually gives birth to him on christmas eve, that's why she has to leave before they have Bren's surprise because she is going into labour. I think she must have known she was pregnant which is why she asks Bren about whether she'd wanted children or not.

reply

I thought that was why she left the Christmas party - when she said "I've got to go somewhere" to Bren and hoped she got what she really wanted for Christmas - but I was never 100% sure. It all fits, though.

I think that she knew see was pregnant too, in the episode 'Fog' one of the reasons for not giving blood is pregnancy and she says, after hearing this, that she doesn't feel like going. It always struck me that she did this because she knew she was pregnant.

Wasn't there also a bit - I think before Anita had the baby - where she showed Tony a baby's hat and said "It's a little baby's hat - for a little baby," to which Tony replied, "I thought it was a bollard warmer", in reference to Stan's retractable bollards in the car park.
It makes sense that she'd bought it in preparation for the baby being born, but - at that point in the series - we didn't know that. I think you're right about her decision not to give blood because that episode was set in November, so - if she had the baby on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day - she had to have known she was pregnant by then.

she said that in the epsiode "9th June 1999" where she first met the bloke that ends up being the dad, he's the one thats painting the kitchen, so she couldnt have been pregnant then as she hadnt had sex with him yet, I think she just bought it in general as in series one its always made clear that anita wants a baby, so she probly just bought it because she wants a baby in general and bought just because she likes it.

Also thats the episode where they say its the day you need to concieve if you want to have millenium (""Minellium!) baby so she concieved that day and had the baby a few days early.

I wondered if the real reason she kept 'Malcolm' the blow up doll was to try and hide her pregnancy and they always said you couldn't see anything underneath the uniform...

reply

Remember she was carrying inflatable man Malcolm around? Presumably to hide pregnancy?

The babies father was Paul the decorator from the episode Catering. I think she knew she was pregant, as in series one she was upset cos she never had a baby, but in series 2 there was less of that and for all the reasons already stated i think she knew. I guess the only person to answer this question would be Victoria, unless she doesn't even know herself.

reply

She knows she is pregnant, but she doesn't tell anyone because she plans to give the baby to Bren once it's born. There are hints about this all through season 2, but they are only noticable if you look out for them.

After leaving the baby for Bren, she realises she can't give it up and cries to Bren that she is sorry (she is crying because she feels bad about giving Bren a baby and then taking it back again).

I know this thread is 8 years old but just wanted to add something. She definitely didn't know she was pregnant in series 1 because it wasn't meant to be her that had the surprise baby!

It was supposed to be Twinkle but whilst they were all on break/doing other things whilst series 2 was being written Maxine Peake went on a sneaky diet. She came back to the read through for series 2 and threw it all out because it wouldn't really work then. Victoria had to add in a few lines about her going to slimming club and changed it to Anita having the baby.

Which I think works better anyway cos it fits in with the whole Anita knows nothing format.
