Is this Film worth seeing?

I was just wondering if this film is worth seeing because the ratings aren’t so good.

the film is on now on bbc1, its pretty gd!

my names rick from england, we used to rule the world before you

reply

Yeah, nice film with a sad, yet grimly predictable, ending. Only marginally less rending than the finale of Blackadder Goes Forth.

It was good enough but I'd like to see a bit more money invested in these films, I know the US fund most of these things and are more interested in the second world war but still, just one...? Please...? and do a good job of it i.e. no stereotypes, no "the US saved your asss" jingoism and a bit of humanity. A balanced picture of both sides would be welcome. Anyone else?

reply

Yeah it is, especially for a non-Hollywood film. It surely depicts the life of the soldiers in the trenches better than Saving Private Ryan, which is just too romantic. And Paul Nicholls is a pretty good actor. I'm Belgian, but for once I say: Hail to England!

the freaky thing about them casting Daniel Craig in the film, is that in a few of my history text books there's this one photo from the great war, and it's of a man helping a fallen friend through a trench. Daniel Craig is the spitting image of the man helping his friend in that photo, it's quite weird. I've seen the photo used in documentries and such, anyone know what i'm talking about? It would be interesting to know something about it.

reply

not seen the photo but just giving my two cents!
personally, i really liked the film, i was just off to bed when it came on and it made me wanna stay up and watch it!
in all honesty, ive not seen many war films so i cant compare but i really did enjoy this film and it really does make you think and wonder whever you woulda been able to go over the top.

Yeah I've seen that picture loads, this one here:

(sorry it's a small resolution)

I'm pretty sure it's a screen shot from film footage...

I saw it on BBC 1 yesterday. It was all too pristine, immaculate uniforms etc, and yet mud on their faces with no mud in sight! Apart from the stage like set, the acting was reasonable. However, there were too many dialects and accents going on at once for my liking. It was difficult to keep trying to tune your hearing into the cockney from the scottish from the geordie to the lancastrian to the scouse to the Irish...

My final gripe in an otherwise average film of it's genre was that the end totally ripped off the end shot of Gallipoli.

Anyone else notice that?

reply

Yeah the picture is from film footage. You watch any documentary in the UK about WW1 and you're guaranteed to see that film clip. There was a programme on a few months back where they tried to identify the man carrying his friend - but they couldn't.

A bit late in the reply, but I had just finished watching the film when I came across the photograph you're talking about and had the exact same thought:

The resemblance is unnerving.
