Why the bad reception/reviews?

I tought this movie showed a grim look at the soldiers life during the WW1,and good ww1(or any at all) are far apart,Daniel Craig plays a good Staff Sgt,a guy I would follow into battle any day,now You may appriciate this movie a bit more if you have some experience from the military yourself(I am a currently serving E-5,in a combat Infantry Unit,Scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan after the summer)you will appriciate the universal things and truths about soldiering/soldier's life be it the Civil war or OIF(Iraq)..and that is boredom, boredom and more boredom punctuated by sheer terror.
I tought this was a good movie, maybe not a masterpiece but I could certainly relate to the soldiers and their misery, even if I never will know exactly how a frontline Infantryman had it during The Great War,I have a general idea..

I agree. I really enjoyed it.

I agree with your remarks about Daniel Craig's character. My grandfather served in the First World War, most of it as a Sergeant, I imagine him to have been like Sergeant Winter. My grandfather did miss the Somme, being in England in hospital at the time, but was posted back to France in time to take part in the Battles of Messines and Third Ypres. He ended the war as a Warrant Officer Class II. I can't begin to imagine what he experienced.

One of the few faults I can find with the film is it is too quiet. The artillery bombardment in the run up to 1st July was loud enough to have been heard in England!
