One problem

Wouldn't the kids have wondered (or even heard) what their mom was ranting about before they went to dinner at the end of the movie? They must have asked and even though Katie and Ben liked to act like their kids were still 6 (calling themselves Mommy and Daddy) I hope they would have been honest about being this close to a divorce. Especially since the daughter already kind of knew that they were having problems. So I assume that the kids ended up living in constant fear that their parents are going to split up. What a happy ending!

Just watched this tonight. In addition to that, what about the argument they were having in the living room while the son (?) was upstairs asking for water? When we were young, my brother and I used to hear our parents arguing (nothing like this movie), but even a small argument would have caused some distress or us at least standing at the top of the stairs wondering what was happening. It was like the daughter had that one moment of sensing something was wrong, but nothing followed from her or her brother.

I get that the movie wasn't really about the kids, but they should have dealt with that aspect a bit more.

Their daughter knew they were having problems, and kids arent oblivious to parents marital problems, especially this particular family. They were close, they ate dinner at the table every night and discussed their "highs and lows" of the day. They heard their parents fight on occasion, and when he was asking for water, he knew they were fighting, and it might have been the child's way of trying to defuse the situation. But they seemed like the normal married couple of 15 years. My parents have been together for 31, and so at their 15 yr mark I was probably Erin's age. My parents had their ups and downs, but at the end, they worked it out. They even separated for about 8 months my Jr year. So I can relate to this movie. So at the end, the mom babbling, they possibly could have heard some of it, or maybe they were talking amongst themselves in the car about their summer. Who knows, but Id like to think they are still married, and sure they still had issues, but I think the separation was a big wake up call for them, much like my parents.
