Did anyone else find Michelle Pheiffer's crying + moaning annoying???

Maybe I walked in at the wrong time, but this came on tv, and that was the first scene I saw.....just redundant crying, pitching and moaning from Michelle Pheiffer (who I would "do" anyday! lol)....but damn, she was crying to Bruce Willis and went on and on and on and on, for what seemed like forever. I finally couldn't take it!! And I had to switch channels!!

There ya go. You need to watch the movie in its entirety to truly appreciate her performance; to see where she is coming from, to see things "through her eyes."

I know this because Tyler knows this.

I agree with you. It's that she wasn't 'crying' that made it so annoying. It's a given some actors can cry on queue and some cannot. If they can't do it, then change the scene. Her scenes could have still been emotional and meaningful without her pretending to cry.

Ok I'm going to respond to a post made YEARS ago, but I just have to. Michelle Pfeiffer can definitely cry with "tears" if the scene calls for it (Frankie & Johnny). But this scene in the end wasn't really one where she's supposed to be bawling. I think the scene was just her character unraveling. I think her performance matched the character (neurotic girl with too many thoughts in her mind saying them all at once).

Whereas, in Frankie & Johnny, her character was recalling a time when she was beaten by a man, and in that scene she did cry with tears. It was a beautiful scene. I think the scene in The Story of Us was much more challenging though, in a different way.

I think anyone could do a regular crying scene. But it's not always good. Julianne Moore in The Forgotten had a crying scene, and it looked awkward. And Ashley Judd's crying scene in Where The Heart Is was also strange and out of place. Michelle Pfeiffer's in Frankie & Johnny trumps their scenes. I also thought Angelina Jolie's little crying scene in Original Sin was done quite well.

having dated that "character" for about 8 months, I'd say the portrail was discustingly accurate

Actually, I found that particular scene fascinating. Before I get to that, let me say that I thought many of the responses to your thread to be of value and I commend them for it. Moreover I found your impression not unreasonable at all, given that you walked in at that moment. But on to my fascination.

1. Michelle is an exceptional actress. I won't defend this point, since there are many who agree with it.

2. Michelle's range of emotions and related behavior on-screen is vast and so we can expect her to capture a comparable range of characters, and not just play the same ones over and over again. And she certainly does this.

3. Her performance in that scene was vastly different than anything she has done before and reflects her portrayal of this particular character, which is somewhat different than any she's done before.

4. That she could carry on and on in that "annoying" way is testament to that range. It was a critical point in the movie where everything following it would either come together or fall apart. As such it showed the character both at her worst and and her best. Others might have played it straight. Michelle took the opportunity to make it something that looked difficult to attain in order to do justice to the difficulty any of us might have in trying to make a marriage work when it has been falling apart for a long time.

With respect to the comment from xvaesthirsxv about needing a bit of fakery, I can't say as I agree, particularly since her performance is exactly the sort of thing that a desperate woman that is trying to make a marriage work would sound like, as annoying as that might seem out of context. As such, I disagree with the assessment given of Ashley Judd, since such performances are exactly what makes her one of the better actresses of our time. With respect to Julianne, however, I might agree. Her range of emotions isn't quite what Ashley naturally has, imho. I do like Julianne in those roles where she plays a hard-ass.

For people who think that Michelle didn't really crying out with tears.....I do have a different point of view.....in most of these scenes....the two leads are fighting/argue, it's not a break down scenes, Katie is supposed to be sad and angry at the same time, so I think it's reasonable for the character only have little tears in the eyes rather than actually cry out with tears all over her face.

The whole damn movie was annoying.

She was thinking about her father that's how she was able to cry
