As for Fox, it is pretty much the only mainstream places to go for a differing opinion and to see stories the rest of the mainstream ignores. Much of what people get here and probably true in Europe is anything from liberal leaning to leftwing nuts. Turns a lot of people into sheeple.
I'm coming late to the game, but this is absurd.
1. Fox News is not news and it's not mainstream. It's a sound off by and for the hopelessly ignorant and very angry. It lies and spins - and does so with the purpose of presenting conservatives in the best light possible and liberals (or even moderates) in the worst light possible. (I actually know someone who worked there once and they used to circulate memos about how to spin stories to favor the right-wing.) And they're not offering "diverse views" to provide perspective and contribute to the political discourse - they're right wing shrills.
2. The "mainstream" media in the US is quite neutral politically. It is neither conservative nor liberal - and this should be obvious - because it has to appeal to the center. The nightly news on ABC, NBC, and CBS are all moderate, middle-of-the-road broadcasts. They aren't particularly hard-hitting or cutting edge, but that's because they appeal to a broad range of viewers.
3. There is a liberal media, it's on MSNBC. It is more or less the liberal counter to Fox, except that some of their talking heads are pretty bright (not all, but IMO Chris Hayes is quite good). Like Fox, they take a liberal slant to issues.
That being said, Bush did have detractors all along, but what the other poster said is also correct - detractors were portrayed as anti-American and unpatriotic.
