Why was Misty mean to Laney?

It doesn't really match up...the goth girl being mean to the art girl?

Unless she's just the exception; being a bully goth.

reply

I think she was just jealous of her 'transformation'.

Jealous bitches can be mean bitches.

Misty was a rich popular girl. Her goth look was pretty much just a trend to compliment her artistic ability. She kind of confirms that at the party when she gloats to Laney that she received a scholarship to her first choice art school, implying that she could have afforded it regardless, but that she got it because of her social standing.

Agree.

I think in She's All That land, you can be rich and alternative or poor and 'normal'...
If you are neither of these things then you are Laney Boggs or her Captain Peg Leg chip eating friend - and everyone will pick on you.

Been awhile since I seen movie but my understanding was that she was upset about Laney trying to fit in w/ the "IT" crowd. Only reason Misty was at party was because she was one of the rich girls which gave her lead way to been invited.

She saw Laney all dolled up which was something that she perhaps knew Laney wasn't about.

But this was after Laney's transformation. Why was she so horrible to her in art class in the beginning?

reply

I think she was just a mean girl. Period. No reason-- she was just a spoiled bitch. There are people like that, in real life as well as in the movies. I knew a few in high school. My high school was _very_ cliquey.

I always thought it was because Misty was either jealous of Laney's artistic skills (and therefore Laney got more attention and accolades from their teacher) or because Misty was a very talented artist and felt that Laney shouldn't be in art class because Laney wasn't a "real" artist. But I think it's probably because Laney was a better artist. Or maybe Misty was just a bitch. :D

The characters in She's All That were just mean @ss people, period. There seemed to be a disdain toward Laney from everybody. Even Zack didn't care much for her at first. Then, of course, he accepted the bet and then got to know her and, naturally, ended up really liking her. I never got why that whole school seemed to have it out for her when she was such a shy, quiet person.

At the beginning of the film, Misty and some other girl talk to Laney in art class. They said that while they were in Spain over spring break, they talked about how Laney should die, like the dead master artists, so that her artwork will become valueable. How cruel! This school sucks, and the students are vipers.

I think Misty could have been jealous of Laney's talent, which had not fully come forth yet but probably showed signs of being superior to her own. At the end the film, the art teacher comes up to Laney and said her last work was the best piece she saw that year, commented on how she finally opened up and unlocked her true talent, and told her she faxed off a recommendation to art school.

The film doesn't give us much to go on, but it set up Laney as the ultimate bullied nerd just so her rise would be Cinderella-esque. Cinderella stories are not complete with ugly stepsisters. (Yes, I know this was based on Pygmalion but there is a touch of Cinderella in it too.)

^ This. Very flawed film. This film would be eviscerated today and rightfully so. Students bullying another student into suicide! WTBF!! That s—- happens in real life and it’s horrific and tragic and has no business being in some teen rom com.
