only problem I had with this film

I'm a guy, and I actually didn't mind this movie. I just saw it this past weekend, and I found that it's just dumb, clichéd, cheesy fun, and I actually enjoyed it. After seeing it, I moved Rachael Leigh Cook into my list of celebrity crushes.

That being said, the only problem I had with it is Laney was supposed to be quirky and "unattractive". If they really wanted to go that way, they should've had someone like Clea Duvall in the role. Even in her "unattractive" state, Laney was cute and quirky, thanks to RLC. And then when she got the makeover, good God, she was to die for; she was simply hot. Not over the top hot, but hot. I liked how they didn't overdo it with her makeover. Don't get me wrong; I loved RLC as Laney, and she was very good in the role, but you could never convince me that she would be unattractive ever.

I'd have to agree with you there because I thought the exact same thing. There's just no possible way to make this girl look unattractive. Doesn't matter how you dress her up or have her wear her hair.

You are 100 percent spot on...Like a lot of TV/Movies, you need to just suspend "realism" and trick yourself into buying the BS they are selling.

For example, "Dawson's Creek"---Do anyone honestly not think Katie Holmes (Tomboy or not) is cute? Early in the series, they try to play her off like a butch looking P.E. teacher :-)

"America's Sweethearts"---We are supposed to be shocked that a guy falls in love With Julia Roberts?

"A Cinderella Story"---Not only are we supposed to think that no one finds Hilary Duff attractive; we also are forced to swallow the notion that a person that they see everyday in class, as well at the local hangout, can foul them by wearing a mask that covers just her eyes.

And the classic "Gilligan's Island" scenario....While Tina Louise is no doubt a knockout, how blind does the viewer need to be to not notice that Dawn Wells is pretty damn hot herself.

Have you seen Not Another Teen Movie?

They spoof this and pretty much point out how retarded it is when they take an "ugly" girl and make her hot

"oh, not laney boggs,... she has a ponytail... and paint on her overalls" lol

I <3 Emily Blunt

No I haven't :/

Youre not missing much.. its not that funny, but has its moments. Came out as another spoof riding the tale of the huge success of the Scary Movie franchise. It spoofs all these late 90 (and most teen movies) and pretty much spoofs how they could have easily picked out a truly horrible candidate but instead go with the 'weird' girl who is actually super hot under the mask of dumb uglying down. lol

i think you have a very odd definition of a "cult classic" if you think NATM is one.

reply

Agreed. You can see his taste in movies by how unnecessarily hostile and crude he is. These people make my a$$ twitch.

reply

Agreed!! It would have been completely different if it had been a Clea or a Heather Matarrazoo (the princess diaries best friend) RLC is a beautiful girl!

That it exists?

She wasn't supposed to be ugly, she just didn't fit in. Plenty of pretty but "outsider" kids are bullied every freaking day.

Two little issues with the OPs statements. First of all RLC isn't a traditional beauty, therefore wasn't universally viewed as hot either before or after her makeover, which makes her perfect for the role. Secondly, as an actress, she wasn't that good at all. If nothing else, look at the final scene at graduation. That joyous laugh was so fake it made me cringe.
Don't get me wrong, I adored both her character and her looks in the film but, strictly from an objective view, she wasn't all that, so to speak.

I agree with you. I absolutely love this movie. But if RLC is considered unattractive (pre-Freddie Prinze makeover) I would have taken that in an instant in high school! She was much too pretty for the movie (oh my, she's clumsy, how many dudes reject a hot girl for being clumsy????)
