Was The Dance scene cool in 1999?

I remember seeing this in the theaters and even back then, while the sequence was cool, it was ridiculous and out of place. did other people like this scene when it came out or did it seem just as outlandish to everyone else haha

Apparently it's Still cool since people organize the identical moves in high school proms & flash mobs. (Search youtube.)

No. No it was not cool. At all.

Which dance scene, the one at the prom or the one by Matthew Lillard?

If the one by ML, the 70s were kind of cool throughout the mid to late 90s. I was pretty much the same age as the teens in this movie. People would wear some of the glossy outfits from the 70s out when out on the town, but with a more oversized 90s feel, just like what Lillard was wearing with the shirt.

But doing a solo 70s disco dance was still a bit hit or miss, which is why the lukewarm reception to his dance was kind of funny. It's similar to if somebody did a solo dance to "the neverending story" based on the stranger things 80s revival today - half the crowd might be into it, but half might not. As opposed to busting out a 1920s bebop dance where 100% of onlookers would be like "WTF?".

Lets just act like it was.

In reality a high school dance group probably wouldn't be that coordinated so it looks like a staged event instead of a random one. That's probably why you felt that it was probably out of place.
