aka 'The 400 Blows'

Anybody else see the similarities between Joe the King and 400 Blows right down to the final shot of the boy protagonist looking into the camera? Not a bad thing or a rip off, but I couldn't stop thinking about the similarities while watching this movie.

The ending with a still of Joe looking into the camera is undoubtedly an homage to The 400 Blows. I found Joe The King to be a MUCH better movie than The 400 Blows, however. In The 400 Blows, we are supposed to believe that the kid is isolated and neglected... but his parents are ever-present. They are concerned and they try to help. Every time he goes home, they are there and they are interested. He absolutely is not isolated. Joe was. He was a much more believable and understandable character and, because of that, his story was all the more tragic.

Leonard Maltin said, "This movie shows such a dismal life for this boy, it could have been retitled 'THE 800 BLOWS.'"

But I think that was already taken for a porno. Wasn't it?

Uhh, I'm guessing...
