What year was this suppose to be set in?

First off, I enjoyed the movie a lot more than I thought I would, completely entertaining throughout, even though it was very similar to The 400 Blows.

What I want to know is, what year was it set in?

It could've well been set in the 90's, but the records, Chuck Taylors, Joe's bike, Skate Rink, and a bunch of other things suggest otherwise. Anybody know?

I assumed 1970s. Roller skating was big in the 1970s. It was big also in the 1980s but with the hair, the records and the disco, that's what I thought.

Before even reading about it I got the vibe that it was based on the writer/director's own teenage years, especially because of the time period. Frank Whaley was Joe's age in the late 70s, and it shows in the film. I like that it's not in your face about it, which is actually kind of typical of films where the writer based it off their own experience, because it was based on real life not the exaggerated version of the 70s that you see in films like Detroit Rock City or Boogie Nights.

I guess it was the 70's but they probably mixed in some 90's stuff in. Probably to save money on the wardrobe.
