I believe deap inside she knew which life was real and which not. At least she must have recognised herself when she was little and her mother, at the french life.
I think the problem was (or SHOULD be) not about realising which life was real and which not, but most about wanting to choose and leave the past behind (as it turns out). At the end of the film, when the newyork guy points out some clues about the truth it seems so easy for her to get back to normal...
Any thoughts about that???

I think it was a long struggle to get to that point. What impressed me was her strength in saying good-bye to the past AFTER she found that's what it was. I could see a real struggle to do that, and some of us not able to do it.
