What do u think?

I thought this movie was great... something plain and you didnt really need to guess!!! Simple yet really good to watch. Its also realistic in a way which makes it even more enjoyable!!! I also think Kevin Spacey had a flawless Irish accent.

Kevin spacey's Irish accent was absolutely terrible, very few american actors seem to be able to pull off a good irish accent. Usually its based on that whole stereotypical Irish accent that is in most old Hollywood films that personally i have never heard in real life. The film itself was awful, check out The General instead.

i thought his irish accent was super..and i come from ireland!! he's by far the only american actor that can pull it off well!!!and on the extras on the dvd he even uses a little irish phrase in his interview (the phrase is-'a bit of crack')!! the movie was brilliant, kevin spacey was briliant!!

reply

Im irish too and I honestly thought his accent was absolutely terrible. I honestly have never heard anyone talk like that, especially seeing that he's supposed to be from dublin. He sounds kind of like someone from the west, not a hard dublin accent at all.

I enjoyed it. The accent was bad, and some of the moralities of the movie were dubious in what they promoted, but it was definately entertaining nonetheless.

reply

I have to agree with ScarTrek the Irish accents by non irish actors were a not great but the film made me laugh, it was something just to watch, not to actually think about something that can keep you entertained.

His accent was absolutely appalling, he went through dozens of Irish accents, some from Dublin many from other parts of the country. And there was a healthy amount of stereotypical Hollyword Irish accent too.

The movie was brutal. His accent was brutal.

And if you come from Ireland, why did you spell "craic" as "crack"?

I love this movie, just got it on DVD. If you are just looking for a bit of fun then i recommend it. I personally watch it as a comedy rather than as a gangster movie. If you want a gangster movie watch "The General" which is the more realistic film (according to others here on imdb), or watch "Scarface" which is just brilliant.

If you want cogent political debate and morally justified themes DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM. I couldn't give a damn personally and i like the fact that an unabashed criminal is easy to sympathise with in this. That the guy from the IRA just gets crapped on adds to my amusement. For most of the film you feel a bit sorry for the police but towards the end they lost my support entirely.

Kevin Spacey is good in this and while if you're irish his accent is probably terrible, like a lot of foreign accents when done by hollywood, it is at least consistant and wont really bother you (unlike Leo's here-one-minute-gone-the-next accent in Gangs of NY).

A comedy classic.

Man I was sooo excited when I found this movie! I freaked out when I saw Colin Farrell in one of his first movie roles. I was equally excited that he got to work with Kevin Spacey. I have even read that Kevin spread the word about Colin's great acting and screen presence. Kevin is soo hot and cool to do that for Colin.

This is a very good film. As mentioned by supporters previous it is not an insite into the criminal underworld of Ireland, it is a humorous story following Cahill, with some very funny moments.

As for the accent, as an Englishmen I can sympathise with the Irish as Hollywood always produce terrible representations of an English accent (Bridget Jones' Diary), they also seem to totally overlook the vast array of accents all over the British Isles as unfortunately America can only dream of the history and cultural texture we have. Consider the size and span of the US and its different accents, then the size of the British Isles and the number of accents, it is pretty crazy.

It is a very enjoyable film though and personally I recommend it.

Don't feel bad, they can't get New York accents right either. The majority of Brooklyn accents you hear are actually Bronx accents from 1918. Nobody in Brooklyn talks like that. People in Brooklyn talk like the Sopranos or Jay-Z

THIS MOVIE ROTS. This has to be one of the worst movies ever made in it's genre. It even made 'Rancid Aluminum' look like 'The Godfather'. I'd watch 'Good-bye, Pork Pie' a million times before I ever watch this again. This is getting put into the 'Gigli' pile.(At least I still haven't seen that, thank goodness)

It was too american - Disney, the general was so wealthy, imagine Robin hood living in a mansion, whining about the size of his swimming pool.

It didn't make sense. And how's never seeing his family again a happy end ? he may as well have stayed and died.

I'm amazed that an Irish person could think Spaceys accent was good! It was absolutely brutal. The only realistic accent was Colin Farrells and he's from Ireland! If you wann hear an American actor handle the Irish accent excellently see The General Jon Voights accents is spot on!

I'm in my tree talking to the Dixie Chicks and they're making me feel better

Its idiotic, offensive to all irish, and no where near the mark of what the real B A S T A R D, scum bag was like.

i liked it, wasnt expecting much and was satisfied at the end. Easy to watch, nothing special, jus entertaining... meh

reply

well i wathced it in 2000... i remember that i enjoyed it very much, i have to watch it again, last time i didn't pay any attention to his accent:(

reply

I enjoyed the movie as a movie and not a docudrama of the Ireland, IRA etc.
Irish accent can't remember it as I lent my DVD to a "friend" and she never returned it along with the Harrison Ford Indiana Jones collection and several others.

Why do people thinks its okay to not return peoples stuff.
