great anime classic - a must have for otakus

Hey, I'm the first to post something!!!! OK, where to begin...

Megazone 23 Part II is a truly exceptional anime classic. Baring no resemblance to the previous Megazone, this film featured the super sexy cool character designs of Yasuomi Umetsu (dig those fashions and hairstyles). The sole exception was Eve who was designed by the legendary Haruhiko Mikimoto (of Macross fame) - she looked classic Mikimoto. The animation was much better in quality and FAR gorier than the previous Megazone.

I'll admit that I'm a little biased, having seen the obscure Polydor LD English dubbed version of Megazone 23 Part II from many years ago (in which Shougo is referred to as "Johnny Winters" and Yui is referred to as "Suzie Sue"). The quality of the voice acting in THAT particular version was so good! However this new ADV version is completely unedited which is always welcome. The sex scene between Shougo and Yui is mild by today's standards, but probably shocking for its time. The Japanese names are also unchanged which is much appreciated. However, the English voice acting this time is a bit lifeless, and don't seem to match their particular characters that well.

The film's running theme of Japanese youth violently rebelling (with cheerful glee) against authority, namely the police and military can be a bit shocking coming from a popular Japanese film. Young street punks are the heroes. Symbols of authority are the villains. I think that's what set this film apart from me.

Either way, I urge all fellow otakus or casual anime lovers to get the new ADV DVD. It's a worthy addition to your anime collection.
