Watched this last night, didn't understand Alice

I don't understand Alice at all. I couldn't get a sense of who she was, what she was about. Did she love her husband? What was the flashback to the hospital when she was making the map? Why was she awed by the women in jail?

I missed the first twenty minutes so perhaps I missed something critical?

I was put off by her odd behavior - it's not really explained. I think it's her brother who died. I can understand that affecting her, but really, by the time you are an adult with your own children, why would that alone make you completely weird acting? I took it that she had some mental issues, complicated by her responsibilities, that seemed to overwhelm her.

I agree with you that she came off as a bit of a mystery in the end. She seems to become someone else after she goes to jail and I cant put my finger on what is really in her mind after that. Its disconcerting. Plus I dont know if we are supposed to think that her husband doesnt understand her either. Is that the point? It didnt feel like there was an answer.

As to your questions, I think as someone already said, it was a flashback to her brother dying in the hospital and she made the map as a form of escape. And she was awed by the women in jail because they found ways to survive without being able to have their kids with them. I think... As to if loves her husband, Im not completely sure. I think she learned to accept what she had even if it wasnt ideal.
