review of film

when does Agnes scheme to win Concert tickets in the movie? I read the book but i don't remember it well (except for the 'pinnies' and the in-the-closet son) so i don't remember her scheming to win tom jones tickets in that -partly because Cliff Richard was the object of her desire in the book- but she didn't scheme in the movie. Her friend gave her the tickets but she had to sell them to get money to pay back the loan shark. get your facts straight before you put them out.

jeez lighten up girl!!! as an avid reader and a movie fan you have to understand that the two DO NOT go hand in hand, prime exsamples...........James Patterson's along came a spider,at least half the movie was cut out...... and im sure i really dont need to mention these obvious ones.....Silence of the Lambs.... Hannibal.....the book's had me wrenching, the film's had me laughing!!!! if you see a film where you have read the book beforehand you have to expect major alterations...........just a fact.

In the book, the concert is sold out, period. Marion does not supply the tickets. In fact, Agnes does not go to the concert at all. The boys (only Mark, Dermot and Trevor) go to the hotel to fetch the money from their father's union. They end up on the lift as in the film and go to the top floor of the hotel with hotel staff chasing them.

A stranger opens the door, figures out what is going on, and pulls the boys into his room. He has them tell what's going on (including things about their family and their Mammy's disappointment over not seeing Cliff Richard) and then sends them down the back stairs to the fire escape. They almost leave the envelope with the money behind but the stranger, Harry Webb, runs after them and then sends them on their way with the money in hand.

The final scene has Agnes finishing up Christmas preparations. The children are all clean and fed and sitting in the glow of the Christmas tree lights when there is a knock at the door.

Who should it be but Harry Webb (who read the address from the envelope the boys almost left behind. Only Harry is none other than Cliff Richard himself. Agnes dances with the man of her dreams while her starry-eyed children look on. A lovely ending and, IMO, one that is actually a little more believable.

Cliff Richard probably was not available, Tom Jones was.

I thought maybe Anjelica Houston knew Tom Jones.

That or it was assumed that with all Tom Jones' plastic surgery he looked more like his 1960s self in 1999 that Cliff Richard would've.
