Why So Many Smokers?

Since we get to see four modern, intelligent, professional, aware women, is it necessary to have a majority (3) be smokers? And to not even have this issue addressed? It should have been portrayed as a flaw to be dealt with, like sexism and racism, not merely a character trait.
