I just finished watching this film (rented from Netflix), and based on the 2 little comments, it's obvious this is not a well-known film.
I loved watching it, just for a glimpse of Japan in the late 50's.
Thanks for posting the link to the review on dvdtalk!

This is, indeed, a well done and beautifully photographed film.
The subject matter was daring for most countries back then, but even though it's no longer considered daring, "Crazed Fruit" still has an almost hypnotic quality that draws in the viewer. It's an atmospheric little gem that maintains it's lure, and it's original punch.

I first saw this years ago at a repertoire house in New York. The next time I saw it was when I purchased the Criterion DVD. The Criterion disc is a good investment, if you love good cinema.

..and, yes, I did watch it on TCM, too.
They have it listed as one of the free-film choices on the "TCM-on-Demand" channel on my cable-TV, and I've tuned in to it several times, so far.
