Interesting....

In the original musical, Princess Tuptim is in love with Burma prince, Lun Tha. In The King and I 1956, Tuptim is in love with Lun Tha. They are the most alike I think, besides I Have Dreamed not being in this one. In Anna and the King, Tuptim is in love with servant/commoner Balat. In The King and I 1999, servant girl Tuptim is in love with Prince Chulalongkorn. WHOA! When did THAT happen?? And for all the things portraying Anna and the King being in love, that never happened in the musical either. At least, not that I can see. It's not quite at blatantly in front of your face, anyway. There are hints, like when they dance together for the first time, and he's all concerned that he's not holding her the right way, and when he doesn't whip Tuptim because he's afraid of hitting Anna/because he doesn't want to ruin himself in Anna's eyes, etc., etc., etc. When the king dies in the original, Anna may be/is shown sobbing at his deathbed, but this doesn't necessarily constitute romance, it just constitutes concern and respect and a liking of the king. Anyways, just my two cents, I thought it was pretty interesting.

Dear me! What is that unpleasant aroma? I fear the sewer may have backed up during the night.
