Initially promising... following seasons rubbish

I loved the first season. It was exciting. Mysterois. The uncovering of alien plots to infiltrate and subvery humanity. What the heck happened in following seasons? I can't watch it anymore... it's goofy and plain bad. Any suspense is long since gone.

I can't say I was ever actually thrilled by this show. I watched it because a friend taped the Friday night lineup from SCI-FI for me, and I liked both Farscape and Lexx. I even kinda liked the Lost Notebooks of Jules Verne, or whatever that show was called.
So, I watched First Wave, and kind of enjoyed it. Sure, pretty much everything about the show had been done better somewhere else, but it was still fun. My problem really came in at the season 1 finale and season 2 premier. I still feel the show should have changed names or something to "Second Wave." They should have had the sack to actually advance the story. Instead, they pushed the wave back for an indefinite time. That's when I realized the show was never going to go anywhere. It was never going to give any answers of come to a satisfying conclusion. They'd just keep delaying the first wave. Boring. So, I started fast forwarding over that part of the tape.
It's too bad, as the Nowhere Man meets the War of the Worlds TV series premise was fun. But ultimately it simply wasn't a well enough crafted show to survive. You need to shake things up. You need to let stories progress and characters change. Static shows just don't have the appeal they once did. Hell, I don't think they ever did. It was just the advertisers and studios who wanted to sell them into syndication that liked static stories.

Surprise, surprise. theyellowsign doesn't like a cult sci-fi show that a great deal of others find brilliant.

reply

Is that a reference to something, skiop? Did I dislike something you like?

I do like a lot of cult TV shows. I just thought First Wave wasted a great opportunity to be something cool, becoming more and more bland as time went on, until I quit watching. Sorry if that's peeing in your cornflakes.

@theyellowsign

based on what you said in this thread i'm curious... what did you think of Earth Final Conflict (or the shÍttý remake V 2009)?

Most people seem to think s1 was the best and the rest progressively more garbage.. I however liked all 4 seasons. (that's right, season 5 isn't even EFC)

You're a load in my pants Al - Officer Dan

I did not like what very, very little of the V remake that I saw. But it wasn't more than a few clips.

As far as Earth the Final Conflict, I never seemed to be able to follow that show. Whenever I'd catch an episode, it seemed like it had a whole different cast than the last time I saw it, and that some major things had changed. Then when it started coming on on DVD, it came out in a really weird order, so I never picked it up. I think season 5 came out first (?). Like Andromeda, it seemed like it had some cool ideas, but again, like Andromeda it didn't seem to realize them very well. But again, that's from my very, very limited view.

I liked the second-season episode where they were killing off Nostradomus's descendants. That one alone was worth the second season.

It's been almost three years since I started this thread, but alrighty lol :D

Anyway, they showed the first season here several times over. I actually missed the second season almost completely. Season 3 just seemed really, really trashy and redundant, story-wise.

reply

Yeah, the 3rd season wasn't that good but it had some memorable episodes, I didn't particularly like Traci Lords though, I think her introduction weakened the show a bit and we get to see less of Cade, well, a little bit less to be fair.

I disagree, i liked the character of Jordan or tracy Lords, i thought Cade needed some sort of a strong female regular.

Why don't we just wait here for a little while...see what happens...

reply

That might be the reason why "FIRST WAVE" had comic books made in there last season, with traci lords in it. don't know how many copies was made

either they was trying to hard, or traci lords should have been in all three seasons.

I'm going to be brutally honest. I don't think she was a very good actress on this show, at times Spence wasn't the best either but he was usually solid. Labelle made that damn show. However, he definitely needed Spence's character as well. The two were a great team with action, adventure and a bit of comedic relief. We didn't need a porn star and to me it's completely obvious that the writers were running thinner on ideas the show was losing ratings and they threw her into the mix for sex appeal. Sex sells and it all comes back to the lack of understanding Sci-Fi or Sci-Fi fans.

Well I suppose rather the problem is that Sci-Fi fans are minority. They're hoping the peanut gallery who normally steers clear of Sci-Fi will go "OOO!!! BOOBIES!" and start watching and sadly it sometimes works. For First Wave it didn't work and I think they lost some of their initial viewers from fans who liked the series as it was. I liked it as it was but stuck with it even with the unnecessary smut after all there was some unnecessary smut earlier in the series already.

Nudity was a common addition in the show but I watched it for the great fun of them investigating and trying to expose and defeat the aliens. To me it's that sci-fi premise and how it was executed that made the show great. When they started smutting it up it really started to go downhill but not due to the smut alone of course I think the writing was just getting more and more flat. So anyways I understand where the OP is coming from.

That's my opinion we all have one so don't hate me please if you disagree. I still enjoyed all seasons of the show I just think it went downhill and it was a shame. I also should say I didn't like the finale episode. What they did for that is commonly referred to as a cop-out. I won't ruin it for newcomers to the show by saying what happens but they'll understand what I mean by cop-out when they see it.

PS: Being that I live near where the show was filmed it holds a bit of nostalgia for me as well. Such as the episode in the fair grounds the place "Play Land" it really was Play Land which is near Vancouver. In fact I drive by it every day to and from work.
