Watchable because of Alfred Molina

There's not much going on this board - and I can guess why. For a comedy this movie is extremely unfunny. But don't blame the actors. I think working with this sterile mess nobody could have succeeded.

Actually the only excuse to watch this movie is the rather enjoyable performance by Alfred Molina as Snidley Whiplash. And also Alex Rocco brought a smile to my face.

Does anyone else think, that these two actors safed at least a little bit of the movies honour?

Heh... I only watched it BECAUSE Alfred Molina was in it! Otherwise.. yes I agree with you, the movie really isn't all that funny. I only laughed at the expressions that Molina made, and his voice.

Yeah, I agree. I saw this movie because of Alfred Molina, and on those terms, it was ok. The movie has its moments, and most of them involve him. (I did think Dudley's dream sequence where he reunites with Horse was very funny as well.)

The most annoying thing was, this premise could've been good. It was clever to create a love triangle between Dudley, Nell, and Whip, and it was also clever to force Dudley and Whip to switch places. Unfortunately, Hugh Wilson decided to focus more on silly sound effects and pratfalls than mining the humor from those two concepts. Just think how great the acting would have been if the actors didn't have to fight the script!

Does anyone else get the feeling that Molina was doing an imitation of Blackadder? His accentt and inflections sound just like Rowan Atkinson's Snidely-type character.

Alfred Molina is unerringly spectacular here. He bags the majority of the film's meagre excuses for laughs, and his furious commitment to selling the cartooniness of Snidely Whiplash left me doing double-takes every time he turned around and reminded me he was a live action human being. Textbook effort of an actor tirelessly out-classing the film surrounding them.
