Why did Nello

think he had nowhere to go. Before he found out that Grande was his dad. Surely a townsfolk would have taken him in. Like William the blacksmith. Was it just pride?

Loved the movie known about it for years but just saw it last night.

I wondered the same thing when I first saw this movie, and I've come to this conclusion:

All he ever saw himself as was an artist. When he lost the contest he lost his only chance at his future. He'd lost his mother and grandfather - other than Petrarche, his dreams were all he had. And then the dream was gone too.

Nello likely thought he wasn't good for anything else and didn't want to be a burden on any of the townspeople.
