Did anyone read the book?

It was so sad that I cried in the end. I'm glad they changed it for the movie.

I saw this for the first time last night. It wasn't a great film -- some of the dialogue was a bit stilted and I couldn't get over Jon Voight's hair -- but it was very entertaing and well done. Patrasche nearly stole the show!

I read *about* the book because when I saw the Donald Crisp version of the movie (the earlier with David Ladd), I honestly thought the movie was about a real painter-- both the adult painter and the boy who wanted to become a painter.
I thought it was a biography ! Boy was I wrong. I kept waiting to find out which famous artists Theodore Bikel and David Ladd became! It was already a downer-kind of movie (the Donald Crisp movie) but the book that it was very loosely based on was downright depressing !

Was the Cheryl Ladd version of the movie any different, or closer to the book?
