James is Gary Mitchell

James is growing more powerful every week. He's also getting a little rebellious with his pronunciations of names like Dr. Dre ("Dr. Dreee.")

He's like Gary Mitchell from Star Trek, except instead of being megalomaniacal and powerful with delusions of godhood, he's just a guy who keeps winning and winning on Jeopardy.

I also like how he made the joke during contestant interviews about Jeopardy being "a palatable career." I kind of hope he becomes a rebel that the producers are trying to get rid of, but just can't shake off.

reply

No idea who Gary Mitchell is, but I don't want James to become unpleasant.

The quality that makes him likable is precisely his modesty.

reply

Man. A perfectly good Star Trek reference, wasted. :(

But yes, James is cool. I really like him a lot more than Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter, or Arthur Chu, that's for sure.

reply

If it make you happy, it was not wasted on me. I saw the thread title and opened just to make sure that Star Trek was what you were referencing

reply

Not wasted on me! lol Interesting that Gary Mitchell's best friend was named James!

James does seem to have an almost godlike ability to recall facts, factoids, trivia, etc. But I don't think he'll get as full of himself as Gary Mitchell. However if his eyes do start to glow, Alex better watch out!

reply

It would be funny if a real guy named Gary Mitchell came along and gave James a run for his money. In Final Jeopardy he could look at James and say, "You should have killed me when you could, James."

reply

LOL!!

reply

He talked about having met Ken Jennings in a trivia contest once in which he claimed to have "lost terribly."

reply

Yes, I read about that somewhere - Jennings said James was this very impatient guy who would attempt to answer before he (Jennings) even finished asking the question, and he got most of them wrong. :)

reply

It was an admission he made to Alex either yesterday or the day previous during the one-on- one after the first break. Yes, he does often appear hurried in his responses, talking over someone else.

reply

I realize that, but I am saying I also read it somewhere. My phone keeps popping up articles about Holzhauer - he is all over the news.

reply

Yes, Alex told him at one point that he would become somewhat of a celebrity and it's come to pass.

reply

If he beats Ken Jennings' record, he will become actual A-list, with everything that entails.

reply

Also, I follow his Facebook page where he posts articles and interviews - some of it is interesting stuff.

reply

I remember reading one article about him where he claimed to have gotten much of his knowledge from reading children's books.

reply

He talked about it on the show as well.

reply

Sometimes I think I have a pretty good head for trivia, but I'm not sure I could beat ANYONE who makes it on to the show Jeopardy, much less James. He's so cool under fire. I might know the answer but to summon it up so quickly is hard. I thought when I would first see him he might be an obnoxious jerk, but he hasn't seemed that way to me. During the game he looks so serious and seems to be concentrating on the board, but when things are relaxed him seems like a nice guy.

reply

He's more like Barkley isn't he? The (Next Generation) episode in which he mysteriously becomes a super-genius.

reply

I guess so. Gary Mitchell would have known to wager more. ☹️
