Character by character comparation: 1973 vs. 2000

Here is my character by character comparative between the 1973 and 2000 version of Jesus Christ Superstar. I like the 1973 version much more:

Jesus: Probably the worst part in the 2000 version. Ted Neely was perfect as Jesus, great singing, great acting, left the bar extremely high. Glenn Carter was awful, boring singing and expressionless acting.

Judas: Again, Carl Anderson was perfect as Judas, another bar set extremely high. Jerome Pradon did his acting part OK, had a good attitude for Judas, but his singing was awful, particularly when compared with Anderson.

Mary Magdalene: Yvonne Elliman was again a perfect cast (really, the 1973 version nailed it with their choice of lead actors). But Renée Castle did also an amazing job, and I would say that she was as good as Yvonne. Both great singers and both showed the emotion needed for the role. She and Peter were my favourite cast members on the 2000 version.

Pontious Pilate: I prefer Barry Dennen in the 1973 version. I liked that they took the risk to reshape his character in the 2000 version, but Fred Johanson overacted a bit too much.

King Herod: Not my favourite character in either version, but he is supposed to be a comedic act. I prefer Josh Mostel (1973) over Rik Mayall (2000). At least the former made me laugh.

Caiaphas and Annas: They make a good "evil couple" in both versions. Vocally, I prefer Bob Bingham (1973) as Caiaphas, Frederick B. Owens (2000) voice is too much low. On the other hand, I prefer Michael Shaeffer (2000) voice over Kurt Yaghjian (1973) as Annas, the later has an annoying voice.

Simon Zaelotes: I never liked too much Larry Marshall (1973) in this role, Tony Vincent (2000) was a bit better.

Peter: the only character that I find much better in the new version. Philip Toubus (1973) was a very bland singer (Trivia: he has a very prolific career in pornography). On the other hand I loved Cavin Cornwall (2000) voice, is a shame that the character is relatively minor in the story.
