Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 - Stardust Memory - The Best Gundam Series

I just watched this series again - it stands one of the greatest anime stories of all time, not just in the Gundam realm. Its about the horrors of war, the duty of loyalty, the bonds of friendship, the loss of innocence, the embrace of romance, and the glory of peace. This series really packs it all into 13 emotional episodes. The Gundam combat is intense and the characters draw you into the story. Like in a real war, there are casualties and they are multiple here. This series stands as one my favorite animes. The story of Kou Akagi, Nena Purpleton, and the rest of the cast of 0083 Stardust Memory just shouldn't be over looked.

This is the what Gundam is and should forever be.

I also highly recommend the gritty Vietnam feel of "Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team" which is simply amazing.

I'd recommend ZETA Gundam, coming out in NOvember 04 on DVD. It's by far the darkest and the best Gundam.

I've seen Zeta, but I think 0083 is better. Zeta Gundam was bogged down with too
little story over too many episodes, and lots of kiddy crap thrown it to assure
parents it was still a kid's show.
0083 is, I think, Gundam in its purest form. All the good stuff, with none of the
bad.

How low the bar has fallen. Yes, there was kiddy crap, quite a bit of it. Actually
have children on the Aghama for one thing. They also had Camille spend serious
time trying to fix the toy from the first series (the name escapes me at the moment).
I'm not saying it wasn't adult. (and frankly, having episodes that revolved around
Titans gassing entire colonies, or blowing holes in their hulls with a
Solar System, exposing them to space, is far more gory than the ending.) My main
complaint was that there is a long expanse of episodes that really aren't needed.
(apt titles would've included: "non-plot-important stuff happens." "more non-plot-important stuff happens", "setting up the sequel".)
There is so much fluff from the time that Camille returns to space for the first
time and the very end when it starts to wrap up. Not to mention that Four only
appears in a scant number of episodes, in unceremoniously killed off, without
nothing about her character ever being resolved.
I don't think I would be as disappointed in it as I am if it didn't have such
great potentional. Those first 10+ episodes (from the start until they return to
space for the first time) are as good as anything 0083 can offer. If you want
to compare those, then I'd agree Zeta is better. But 0083 ended, whereas Zeta
just kept GOING and GOING....

I liked the first and original Gundam series the best. The only really bad thing about it was the very old animation that probably didn't have a good budget to work with. When I got to see Zeta I was very let down and disappointed. Mostly every hardcore Gundam fan always says Zeta is the best Gundam series ever. The episodes just seemed to drag and drag until they got done after being on the Auldulmla on Earth. Also, Amuro didn't have much screen time and was a total pussy . I wish he got over his fears and went to space with Kamille. I'm not saying like hijack the main character spot from Kamille like what happened in Gundam SEED Destiny... (Kira was the main character in the first SEED series like Amuro was in the original and then in SEED Destiny, Shinn was the new main character but then some crappy directing happened and Kira totally hijacked Shinn of his spot) but I'd want Amuro to be a supportive role to the series itself and Kamille. The ending leaves you on a cliffhanger which then leads you into it's crappy sequel. As much as I liked Double Zeta it just kind of totally ruins Zeta.

Also, I'd say 0083 was the worst Gundam OVA series and maybe the second worst overall UC series (excluding Victory since I haven't seen it yet). When I mean worst I mean least favorite.

This series was good for one thing: Eye candy.

Characters were annoying, and story had big enough plotholes to pass a colony.

Overall I rate it at beast middle of the pack in terms of Gundam series.

My favorite series was definitely Zeta. Second would be 08th, third would be 0080, fourth would be 0083. The highpoint of 0083 was the amount of fleet battles. Rarely do Gundam series have ships going at it with other ships as much as 0083 did.
After watching these series, I'm going to be expecting a masterpiece of Victory Gundam when it comes out, otherwise I'll be disappointed.

id say 08th was alittle better, but both were exellent! zeta just never stoped, then it left with... go see ZZ Gundam, i just spent $200 for 50 episodes of monotony, now if you'll exuse me, i'm going to go watch them again.

I'd have to say that this show is far superior to the other Gundam series anime. The animation is superb, the storyline is pretty rock solid, the voice acting is great and it blows the Wing series away. That is not to say other Gundam series were bad (08th MS and the like are fine) but this one plain outshines them.

What are the plot holes in 0083? I can't seem to find any.
Homophobia sucks, and not in THAT way.

reply

Why didn't Nina recognize Gato when he first appeared, AND made his speach to the Feds on Australia?

Why is the tech level in 0083 so much higher then those in Zeta?

Why so little damage in the Calgary sector when the colony fell?
It landed on Sydney during the war, and it's not a gulf.

Those are just a few off the top of my head.

reply

That all seems good, but how is the tech level higher than Zeta?

Homophobia sucks, and not in THAT way.

GP03 and Nieu Zieul.

Nothing at the biginning of Zeta had anything like or near that level.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show on a visual level, but that was pretty much it.

The Calgary sector colony drop was far shallower than the Sydney Drop. So while the damage wasn't as severe (a 100 mile hole), it was spread over a much larger area (several thousands of miles). The end result was to make Earth a lot more dependent on the colonies for food production for a couple of years.

0083 is my second favorite. A great series indeed.
