I am a big fan of Gundam(ecxept SD Gundam), I collect the action figures, there staring me in the face right now, and I love the show, and movies, But I thought it started in early 90's. Wow. X_X

Actualy, The movie came out in 81 but the original show came out back in 79 (probably where they got the year U.C. 0079 from). The first movie is mostly rehashed images from the original show, only containing about 20% new footage for the movie, which you can usualy see the difference of due to the differences in animation quality. The 2nd movie had about 50% new footage, and the 3rd movie was about 80% new.
The movies came about because when the show came out it was not a hit and had crap ratings, so the original plan to have 52 episodes was cut short to 43. When the show eventualy got a cult following and then good ratings in reruns later on, they went back to it in movie form and eventualy Mobile Suit Gundam would become the most popular anime series in Japan for a time, the trilligy movie somewhat comparible to the Star Wars trilligy.

yeah i think you're probably thinking of when it was shown on toonami, it was 1979 when the series was broadcast and the movies were started in 1981; then ofcourse the many other series started later with zeta in 1985 (personal favorite), zz in 1987, char's counterattack movie in 1988, 0080 in 1989, f91 in 1991, 0083 in 1992, victory in 1993, g gundam in 1994, wing in 1995, 08th ms team and gundam x in 1996, endless waltz in 1997 i think, turn a gundam in 1999/2000, the crappy american made g-saviour in 2000, seed in 2002, ms igloo in 2004 i think, destiny in 2004/2005, stargazer in 2007, and 00 in 2008...phew
