Hollywood Ending. Spoiler.

I've never wanted to change the ending of a movie more in my entire life. I sat through two plus hours of hardship and misery only to be subjected to Inman being killed by a local militia punk.

I wish at the end of the movie, when Inman was shot in the chest, the bullet had been stopped by the thick stack of letters that he had written to Ada that he kept in his breast pocket. Those were two people who had earned the right to be together. I think this movie would be a classic that people would watch over and over again, had they made that change.

For me, once was enough.

Internet courage is such a yawn.

I don't think he had the book or letters on him when he died. He lost all of his belongings when he was turned into the home guard. The goat woman gave him a new pack but I think the book and letters were lost. If he had had them on him I'm sure he would have pulled them out to show Ada when they were talking by the fire.

His death was heartbreaking. I was 14 when I first watched this film and was practically sobbing at the end. I do think it was the best ending to the story though, as depressing and unfair as it was. It's a true tragedy but I think that's what made the film so beautiful and haunting.

I agree. As heartbreaking as it was, it had to end there in tragedy. Inman had suffered so much already and was nearly a dead man by the time he finally returns to CM. It was his sheer love for her and her request that gave him the drive to against all odds make it back to her. And he did.

I was wondering if they would change the book ending for the movie. I was kind of hoping they would, as it was so depressing. It's a really good movie/book, but just so sad. I don't know if I could watch it/read it again. He gets through so much to see her again and then to have it end like that- it just kills me.
