This movie is TERRIBLE

I am just now seeing this movie 11 years later. Some of these actors received awards for their performances in this movie?! What?! The accents were horrible and the pairings were unconvincing. I could have waited another 11 years to see it.

The book is even worse. I only got 200 pages into it, and after 180 pages of describing roosters and the scenery and 20 pages of plot, I just couldn't force myself through the rest.

reply

Yeah it was terribke, i turned it off after maybe 40 minutes...and Kidman can't act.

The book sounds excruciating.

Oh what a day. What a lovely day!

reply

That's a shame. I always heard the book was better than the movie. I bought the book some time ago, but hopefully I lost it.

reply

I wasn't big on Kidman for the leading woman role, but she did ok. It was Renee Zellweger that nearly ruined it for me. It just looked like Zellweger was trying way too hard to play a role better suited for someone else.

Other than that, I found it a compelling movie and the novel even better.

I tried watching this a few years back, but I don't think I even made it past 20 minutes. Too bad. I like much of the cast & the director, but the characters could not hold my interest.

It takes a while with the back-stores on the main characters structures
before the movie went forward into the plots. You just have to stick with
it a little longer. However, the movie in parts was way too unnecessary violent and spotty. The best element was the dialog, pure poetry. Watch
the last 15 minutes.

It just seemed overwritten - like maybe they tried to put too much in a 2 1/2 hour movie that only needed to be 90 minutes long. It has a dynamite cast in a period piece - what could go wrong? Atrocious accents and a story that was just there. I have to admit, I laughed at Renee Zelwegger's indignation of the cartoonish atrocities, but just sat there as Phillip Seymour Hoffman described his bowel movements.

It's a shame this movie wasn't better - I blame the writer(s) and dialect coach(es).

This was a Hollywood civil war movie...if you want a realistic and genuine Civil War movie try Pharaoh's Army with Patricia Clarkson and Chris Cooper. It's almost like a window into what it must have been like.

reply

actually to my amazement, I see at end that it was Anglo-French-romanian movie...filmed in Romania..

not sure this really was Hollywood, exactly...

Southerners talk funny and that's a fact. I have friends from the hill country and they sound just like these characters.

reply

“Unnecessary violent”. How so? War is extreme violence.

reply

My biggest problem with the movie is that Inman should have died several times in the movie, yet makes a complete recovery.

reply

It's a truly awful and overrated movie. I honestly couldn't understand a word any of them were saying the majority of the time. What a waste of 2 hours.

reply

It's pretty awful. Could've been a lot better. The entire movie was overwritten and over-acted. You could tell everyone was "acting for the Oscar." Doesn't help that 4 of the leads are completely miscast: Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman & Renee Zellweger. Speaking of Zellweger -- what the hell was she doing with her performance??? Laughably atrocious. Can't believe that won her an Oscar.

reply

The performances were fine, but poor Jude Law's character got shot after bedding his wife one time. Talk about short and abbreviated honeymoons.

And then everyone's happy at the end.

Whatever.

Clearly you and some of the other people that posted are in a minority.
