Movie Be Better If Remade Today

Recently watched this on HBO the other night, while its not a bad film per say, i do feel it was miscast and that the book was better as a whole, i do think they would make a better movie today if cast right:

Inman: Michael Fassbender or Joel Edgerton
Ada: Jennifer Lawrence, Brie Larson, Emily Blunt
Ruby:Alison Tolmon (Fargo), Rachel McAdams
Stobrod: Billy Bob Thornton, even though when reading the book i imagined Harry Dean Stanton

Teague: Matthew McConahey or Woody Harrelson
Reverand Veasey: Walton Goggins, Michael Shannon

Is the OP aware that "Ruby" won a best supporting Oscar? RZ was fantastic. The rest of the cast, I thought, were very good. Only one I would've liked being different was Kidman.

reply

Yeah Kidman was 36 when she made this. Between Far & Away, Austrailia and this film, I'm not quite sure how she pulled off a young untouched women of the wilderness so many times. It love watching this but I kept wondering how old Ada was supposed to be.
Natalie Portman would have probably done great in the Ada role.

I think your proposals of a newer cast would be worse than the original. For Ada it just seems like you've gone flavour of the month.

The original cast worked for me but fair enough if you imagined them differently from the book.

This movie betrayed the book in three important ways:

1) The actors were all far too old for their characters. They were supposed to be in their mid-20s at the latest (Ruby is supposed to be 21.)

2) The accents were universally awful. I don't know why actors have such a hard time with accents from the South (notice I didn't say "Southern;" there is no such thing as a "Southern" accent, but rather a rural Missouri accent or a Charleston accent or a northern Alabama accent, etc.)

3) The characters are reduced to shadows of their book selves, and the romance between the two is overplayed.
