When I see Gene Hackman I am always reminded now of his Adam Sandler-style angry scene in Crimson Tide where he is growing impatient with Denzil Washington's character and without warning changes his demeanour from polite but sarcastic to loud vulgar vitriol. I don't know why, but something about the scene is just wrong, or right, I don't know if it was great acting on Gene's part or lazy acting, but it stands out of the whole movie and now I see that scene every time I see Gene.
