Why are all the guys in this so cheesy?

First up, I'm a fan of the show. Even today I think the main characters come across as quite witty, dynamic, and interesting.

But why do the main guys like Mr Big always say something like "keep your chin up, babydoll"? The stuff that makes you cringe. And why do most other guys on the show also sound like Big?

Is it on purpose, to exaggerate how bad some guys can come across? Or was it a New York thing in the 90s?

To elevate the finesse of the main characters. The overarching theme was to depict how difficult it was for sophisticated women, such as those on the show, to find a bonafide man who exhibited all of the traditional male characteristics while also being from generation X.

The young men on the show were fun, but they lacked the qualities needed to remain in a stable relationship with the women on the show, as they had a high standard of living that the younger guys couldn't afford.

The older men, such as Mr. Big, were able to afford the lifestyles they wanted, but they lacked a certain energy that exists with the youth.

I think the show spoke and continues to speak of the current social trend. That is to say, while things have certainly evolved in a technological and social sense, on an objective level, it doesn't seem people are much happier.
