Carrie's exaggerated behavior in season 4

Only ever saw a couple episodes of this and now all six seasons are free with Amazon Prime so I'm giving it a go. Carrie seems - how shall I put it? - extra animated in her speech and gestures in season 4. It's quite noticeable to the point she seems a little out of character. Anyone know why Sarah Jessica Parker started playing Carrie that way?

reply

IIRC, that is when Sarah Jessica Parker became an executive producer of the show. Suddenly Carrie became the big focus, she had more expensive clothes and good things came her way.

I know what you mean! I always think of the scene in "Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda" where she's talking with Aidan in the bathroom while Steve's outside... such dramatic hand movements everywhere!

reply

The most annoying scene was one I saw last night while watching season4:6 called Baby Talk Is Cheap where Carrie goes wacko trying to convince Aidan they belong together. She is whiny, almost manic. I wanted to throw something at her!!! But of course I couldn't. Awful episode.

I'm watching this season now when I see what you guys mean. Especially in the episode where she goes to the country with Aiden and she started screaming when she sees a squirrel. I don't know I kind of like it. Yeah maybe in some episodes she was a little over-the-top but besides that she played the scenes pretty well. She was a little extra though I'm not gonna lie. LOL

reply

I NEVER got why she screamed when she saw a squirrel! Rat? Sure. But arent squirrels always around in NYC??? Especially Central Park?

reply

Lol, most women I know would either scream in delight or find it cute. And from what I've seen in New York, the squirrels would be more likely to not be scared of people and I have seen people feeding them. She acted like it was going to murder her, and this is coming from a person who was attacked by a squirrel a few years ago.

"You have to forgive me, You have to forgive me, You have to forgive me, You have to forgive me, You have to forgive me, You have to forgive me, YOU HAVE TO FORGIVE ME! YOU HAVE TO FORGIVE ME!"

I'm re-watching these on Prime as well, and came here just to post about this. It's so annoying and over the top. It's bad acting, and I usually think SJP is a very decent actress.

reply

Also, I understand her frustration about losing her work on her Mac, but who is that bitchy when someone gives you a new computer (and puts thought into it based on her personality- thinking she'll like it because it looks like a purse, was stylish at that time etc.)

reply

Haha yeah it was like almost every episode she had something to freak out about. Also @Aidens cabin when she saw a squirrel, screamed in the most annoyingly squeeky way, and dropped the base of her applepie and burnt her leg and screaming at Aiden. She'd never been more annoying and over the top to me.

reply

Aidan's behavior frustrated her because he trated her in a way that she felt unworthy of because she knew deep down she didn't love him.

reply

You mean she didn’t love him? Very perceptive of you, think you are right. Still, she was really annoying at times.

reply

I'm watching season 5 right now, and Carrie is even MORE animated in her speech and gestures. It's almost hard to watch... like when the girls are at the coffee shop and they're talking about the great loves in their lives (Anchors Away, episode 1) and she practically screams (talking about herself) "She had two loves and LOTS O' SHOES!" (or something to that effect). I was like dang!! I feel like she's like this in season 4 and mostly season 5 only. It's so odd..

reply

I am re watching season 4 on DVD right now and agree with you 100%. I'm watching 'The Real Me' and she acts like such an idiot with Stanford at the beginning of the episode and then the whole over the top crap about fashion and strutting just makes me want to smack her.

reply

I have watched the entire series 3 or 4 times. I did not notice a difference.

Stay single and happy my friends

She is absolutely annoying. They wanted to give the character some youthful animation to make up for the fact that all these women were too old for this, especially Carrie, who never grew emotionally.
