Why Natasha?

Possible spoilers,
but I would love to hear your opinions on why Big married Natasha, and especially so soon after meeting her, when he had dated Carrie for much longer and also had said he was never getting married again. To me, it just feels like a plot device, but I'd love to hear other views.

Maybe because he was tired of Carrie's drama and crazy behavior. I think he really did just want a "simple" girl who didn't cause as much drama as Carrie did. A woman who held her shyt together more and who was classy. As Miranda said, his light was on and he wanted to date a girl who was low maintainable and low drama whom he could actually be serious with.

reply

What I found funny was that Carrie took that as a compliment

Deep down both Big and Carrie had serious issues, and they deserved each other.I always thought that Natasha and Aiden were to good forthem and both Carrie and Big seemed to gravitate to drama. The sad thing is that in in reality this often happens were women will hook up with people like Big and whatever the they go endure in that relationship and the people they have relationships with after pay for it. They have trust issues or are scarred from the relationship no matter how decent the next person is.

reply

I think it was because he was lonely in Paris and missed having a girlfriend. There were fewer women he could date there, and Natasha was in the right place at the right time. He might not have wanted to date her in NY.

reply

IDK, he seemed to have a thing for dating models while in New York. I agree that the circumstances probably did come into play that gave Natasha an advantage but I don't think he would have moved forward in his relationship with Carrie had he stayed in NY. I also tend to believe that Natasha was probable much different than the other models big dated. From what I recall they were all the stereotypical coke snorting type while Natasha was most likely very straight laced and ladylike. So not only was she a beautiful model, she was drama free and respectable marrying type. I would even go far enough to say he would have left Carrie for her had they met in New York.

reply

Natasha wasn't a model. She worked for Ralph Lauren.

I think Miranda was one to something when she had the "light on" with men theory. I've known this happen in real life where a man avoids commitment then suddenly gets committed. People change. I think it's realistic.

It's exactly like dating someone for years and years and they break up then suddenly he marries the next girl he dates within 6 months. You hear that often in real life. I do however agree in Big's case, Natasha just seemed simple without any drama and That was something Big always thought he wanted.

This very thing happened to me.

But I've always wondered what Big saw in Natasha myself. Sure she was pretty but I kinda thought she was the good-on-paper type that has so much going on you just have to snag her.

Otherwise, he seemed so non-committal and of course didn't take him long to take up with Carrie.

Natasha was more his overall type, the type of woman men like him are "supposed" to marry. Natasha came from a wealthy family, was elegant, classy, very Hamptons type. Carrie worked for a newspaper, was ditzy, and caused a lot of drama--she was the opposite. Natasha was more the type of woman he wanted to be with, but Carrie ended up being the one he really wanted.

Well said, mermaidmotel. Natasha was definitely good on paper, the kind a successful man would be proud to be married to and show off at a party, and the kind people would nod that it made sense. I'm sure he wanted to and planned to end up with a woman like Natasha, but deep down it just wasn't what he wanted.

I always thought that Charlotte would be perfect for Big, because she was beautiful, elegant, successful and knew how to behave in any situation, as well as being very sexual, an ideal wife for a wealthy, conservative man. The dealbreaker would have been her steadfast desire for a family. However, it would have undoubtedly ended in divorce, because Big was unable to be faithful, and Charlotte would not have accepted that.

But it was not to be, because of Big's history with Carrie.

Natasha was just a pale copy of Charlotte, and lacked her warmth and sexuality.

The show didn't even give us a glimpse of what she was like sexually or how warm she was, if anything she was really friendly towards Carrie.

reply

That is something I don't agree with. I like Charlotte and she's very classy, beautiful, elegant and knew how to behave. But I think she was way too conservative for Big’s taste, and in his eyes, a bit boring. Big was a wealthy man, elegant and knew how to behave, but he wasn't conservative, at not least the way Charlotte was.

What he liked most in women was their way to talk back, in a good way. But mostly be able to joke, being on the same wavelength, so to speak. And Charlotte was definitely not on Big's, in my opinion. I think this is the main reason why he fell in love with Carrie, it's kind of Big, in a nutshell; https://youtu.be/xv_IhtMvP4w?t=5m10s :)

Big certainly had a type. His first wife was tall, brown haired, WASP like. Natasha looked similar to his first wife, and if anyone remembers Willow Summers (that actress Big liked) she was also tall, brunette, classic beauty. Physically, Big definitely had a type, and I think he was attracted to women who were cool, classy, reserved, like all of these women.

Physically, Carrie was not his type. She was short, had curly blond hair and was not always the classiest or put together. But people end up with people that aren't necessarily their "type" all the time. Charlotte ended up with Harry, who physically was not as attractive as the other Park Avenue princes she dated.

reply

I agree with you that Big's type seemed to be tall, beautiful and brown haired. I just came to think of Sha "the y is silent" LOL. Not so sure about the WASP thing though. I don't think Barbara, his first wife was WASP like and neither was Willow Summers. I think he was especially drawn to the cool and classy side. And Natasha was all of the former, but I don't think she was as cool, the way the two other women were.

Maybe it's just me, but it didn't seem like they had fun together, and with Big's words to Carrie in the first season about; "after a while you just wanna be with the one that makes you laugh", I believe that's also one of the reasons their marriage didn't work out. And despite that Carrie wasn't his type physically, even though she has a gorgeous body, that's what got him hooked. In my opinion.

And who would've thought that Charlotte who was a choosy woman when it came to men, would fall in love with Harry? But he got her, as she also specifically said, laughing. I like Charlotte, but she is no favourite. But of all the relationships in the series, I probably like Charlotte and Harry's the most.

reply

Yeah, I guess Big never stated or let on that he was exxclusively interested in WASP type women. That leads me to wonder why he chose Natasha though. I guess we'll never know why he chose Natasha over Carrie. I think maybe it was just because the love they had for each other was different than the love Carrie and Big had for each other. You can have different types of love, some types of love can turn into marriage and others can't I guess.

It's just that I think, or at least that's how I feel, that WASP is often a disparaging term. And checking Wiki, they say exactly this and that people rarely call themselves WASPs, except humorously. Which is something Charlotte obviously had no problem with.

I think you pretty much said it yourself, quoted above. I think Big just sat there at a bistro in Paris and Natasha walked in. And she's was one of those "gorgeous women out there", they drank wine and I just think he fell in love with her. For the moment. And the state he found himself in, continued for a year or so, before it sort of started to get boring. MP King has always said that they dressed her in white to show her innocence, but also to clarify that she was more or less the opposite to Carrie.

reply

I think he knew she would never fling greasy fast food burgers and fries at him in a fit of temper.
