With his first name revealed to be "John" in the TV series finale, I suspect the whole wink-wink, double entendre point to calling him "Mr Big" was to imply his penis size. ;)

The name was taken from the book and was the nickname Candace Bushnell had given her real life boyfriend, who was a big deal in the publishing world. I forget his real name but he looked more like Julian, the Vogue editor, rather than Chris Noth.
