For a sex columnist, she really did not like to hear/talk about sex.

I can't imagine how you can be friends with someone like Samantha and actually hate to talk about it. The episode "One" were Samantha is so desperate because of her white hair, something a friend would understand and she interrupted her the whole time. Not sex talk per se but for Sam it was really important and she treats her like a random hooker.

Another time is when they go to the bar opening and she basically forbids Sam and Miranda to talk about it, even when she wasn't involved in that conversation.
How do you become a sex columnist with that kind of bias?

I always found it strange how judgemental they made Carrie. You would think a sex columnist would be open-minded about sex and sexuality but she was almost as bad as Charlotte. Like when she dated the bisexual and how she treated him. I know it was the 90s and people were not as accepting of it as they are now but come on, you'd think a sex columnist of all people would accept it.

Plus Carrie was so dull in the fact she was never adventurous with sex. I think I read someone say on this board somewhere that Samantha should have had the sex column and I wholeheartedly agree. What did Carrie write about that was engaging. Cause it felt like the majority of her column was just rhetorical questions. I do love the show though, haha.

I actually have to skip the bisexual episode, usually, when I'm watching the show because I think the whole episode was a pretty offensive portrayal of bisexuals. The only one who didn't judge bisexuality in a bad way was Samantha.

I actually think even Charlotte was more open minded than she was. Charlotte didn't really like talking about sex a lot of the time and she didn't like giving blow jobs but she was fairly open minded in a lot of ways. She was the only one out of the women who returned the favour of licking someone's butt, she nearly had a threesome (and the main reason she didn't go through with it was because the other woman and the man kind of pushed her out of it), she had her vagina painted, she had sex with a rabbi, when she discovered that Trey was masturbating to the 'Juggs' magazine (despite not being able to get it up for her) she stuck those pictures of her face on the girls to try and help him, she even bought a copy of the magazine for him when for when he was at the doctors to get his sperm tested. I'm sure there are a few more examples which I can't think of at the moment. I can't imagine Carrie doing most of those and I recall her actually judging Charlotte for a few of them.

She really was.

Definitely! Hers would've been more educational as well as entertaining and interesting.

Haha! I have noticed her affinity for rhetorical questions. I think her most used phrase for the column is: 'I couldn't help but wonder,(rhetorical question)?'

I do love the show though, haha.

Me too! I'll never stop watching it.

Now that you mention it, I take back the comment about Charlotte, you gave great examples!

I've been re-watching it and I've been thinking this. She's very judgemental when it comes to sex and she doesn't seem to like conversations about it that much. I feel like her column should really be called 'dating and the city' or 'relationships and the city' because they're mainly the kind of things she writes about. I think the only time she seems to write about sex is when she outs the politician that likes people to pee on him.

Yes! I watched that one a few days ago and I found it weird, she was basically telling them both to shut up like she was embarrassed by them talking about it when she didn't have to be part of the conversation. Also, when they're in LA and Samantha meets the dildo model and gives them the dildo's at breakfast, she gets really funny about it and she spends the whole episode judging Miranda for wanting to try and put herself out more sexually (appearance wise, like when Miranda says she admires what that lawyer is wearing when it's a very short dress and Carrie looks pretty much appalled by the outfit).

The more I watch it, the more I notice times where she seems to try and stop the conversation or shut people up because she doesn't like what they're talking about. She is a very judgemental person anyway but it does make you wonder how she calls herself a sex columnist when she's not very open minded when it actually comes to sex.

Did Carrie ever have sex in anything other than missionary? She was probably such a boring lay.

My favorite New York moments:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQ0Sqmnle6Y

I recall she never even took off all her clothes - she was always wearing a bra in bed. Yet she also wore a bra as outerwear all over Manhattan, including to some very upscale parties.

Strange character!

One of Carrie's worst moments was her treatment of Samantha after discovering Samantha and the Worldwide Express Guy. Was what Samantha did so terrible? My god, it was like Carrie had caught her shooting heroin or something. Carrie blew it completely out of proportion of course with her huge gasp and banging into walls like she had never seen a BJ in her life. This coming from a sex columnist. I wish Samantha had brought up the fact that Carrie's entire career was based on sex.

I think Carrie found it awkward to walk in on, there wasn't any indication she treated Samantha poorly because of it. What are you referring to with that?

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

Um, most people do not expect to go into an office and see there friend blowing a stranger. You seriously have to ask what was wrong? What if it was a client or a child. It was Samantha who was in the wrong and Carrie was right to Judge her. Just because she is a sex columnist does not mean she has witnessed many people blowing someone. Carrie took it reasonably well and it was Samantha who was acting like a child. Then she has the nerve to throw the Big affair in her face. It had to take her experiencing the same thing in order to see her error.what was she supposed to do? Say "oops, my bad. I'll wait out here as it seems your almost finished, oh and I can give you some pointers Sam cause your doing a few things wrong".
Carrie was a columnist who write about sex and relationships. That does not mean she had to be some nympho that has dabbled in every sexual proclivity out there.

reply

^ exactly. for most of us, our jobs do not dictate our lives. I'm sure sex therapists, porn stars, strippers, etc live way more normal lives than we think. One is just a job, it doesn't define the individual.

"Relationships and the City" or "Dating and the City" would not generate as many readers or viewers as the actual name of the column/show. The aforementioned sound quite dull to be honest. It's supposed to be catchy and get people's attention.

This incident and the episode where she meets with a doctor about her cancer and gets so offended by him saying it could've been lifestyle choices as one of the causes of her cancer, made me think she has such a chip on her shoulder.

reply

Its called being human. No one wants to see their friends doing that type of stuff no matter if that person is sex columnist or not. Being sexual doesn't mean you are comfortable seeing other people have sex. Samantha got uncomfortable and shocked seeing Marcus and Stanford together for the same reason.
