are the earliest episodes released on dvd? i think there were 20 some original episodes by miyazaki.

You mean "Rupan Sansei" aka Lupin the 3rd 1st TV series(Green Jacket Series).

They are only availble on Fansubs. And Miyazaki Directed and Wrote 14 out of 23 episodes with the help of Takahata.

thanks. do they tend to be poor quality, and do you have any idea where i could get them?

The ones I have are in the best quality availble. But I do recommend to search the web to find them. Just find the right fansub website, and you should be able to download it if you have free space on your hard drive.
