Question about Episode 4

It's been several years since I've seen it, but I recall Lupin strangling people at the beginning of episode 4 while he's carrying out the robbery. This always bothered me, since it seems very out of character for him. Is that really what happened, or am I remembering this wrong?

In "One Chance for a Prison Break" he indeed hangs three guards, but he takes a brief moment to say "it won't kill you, but you'll rest for a while". So, no, he's just "putting them to sleep".
