Boney in DVD ?

My mother is a huge fan of Arthur Upfield and his Aborigene hero Bony. She just discovered (with my help) this TV-series existed. Seems it does not exist in DVD ? Is there a company which I could beg for release them ?

I am a great fan as well. Have the series been released in any format (VHS,DVD)?

reply

I don't believe it has ever been released on DVD or VHS. But as a fan, I hope that it will be released one day.....

There was a doco on SBS a few weeks back on Upfield and Boney which I've taped but not yet watched. Caroline Baum wrote an accompanying article for Good Weekend about it. Apparrently Upfield's books have a huge following in Europe (particularly France) and both the article and the doco go to some lengths to refute claims of racism on Upfield's part and make mention of plans for a new film/tv project for Boney. Made me very interested to check out the 70's tv series and read the books. I do have a faint memory of seeing the 90's version with Cameron Daddo, but I'd prefer to check out the original.

I am also a huge fan of the Boney books. It appears that the TV series is not (yet) available in the US, but I am going to Australia in January 09 and will try to buy a copy there if it's available. I'll let you know. Hope something comes of the new film project referred to in one of the earlier posts.

Because this great programme had a white actor playing a mixed race native Australian it be came a great embarrassment to the australian TV company therefore i would be very surprised if it ever surfaced as a DVD at any time!

reply

Ah rubbish Broadsman. No Aussies would be embarrassed using a white actor in the role, especially from back in the 1970's. One reason being, finding aboriginal actors in that timeframe was virtually impossible. They were few and far between. One reason for it not being available could be the same reason 'Rush' made in 1973 with John Waters wasn't available. That being that the producers allowed it to be broadcast just the once contractually and because of copyright laws, it can't be reproduced in today's DVD format for general release. However I know of someone who has it. I will put the details on a separate message.

Good news! The original Boney is about to be released on DVD in Australia fully remastered!

reply

Did the release actually happen? I live in Australia but have not been able to track down the series.

reply

There used to be a release date of May on arthurupfield.com. Now it just says release in 2012. Shame - had my pennies all saved up for that one. I was checking back here to see if there were any new info.

reply

As I stated I doubt if a DVD will ever be released!

A few years back I wondered if anyone had ever written a book about the making of the "Boney" television series - nobody had - so I contacted the producer John McCallum in Australia. He gave me lots of help in my research. The original book has now evolved into a PDF file (to read on computers) with lots of photos and exclusive interview with the directors and controversial star James Laurenson himself, plus an MP3 of the original "Boney" series theme and more great stuff.

If anyone would like a copy, please contact [email protected]

It's available under the name 'Bony' from a guy in Australia who has a personal business. His email is [email protected] and his name is Steve Turner. I have his movie archive spreadsheet with everything he has on it and under the title Bony (not Boney) he states he has 9 discs, including 'In Search Of Bony' (2007) which you will all be interested in. The description of this is on the IMDB site: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0847177/

As it relates to the ORIGINAL Bony series, I am guessing the 9 discs (all 26 episodes) relate to that as well. So there you go, contact him if you are interested. The discs aren't cheap, but you don't have to get them all, and you are getting something rare indeed.
