Mystery Victim

I liked this movie, mostly because of the two leads, who have always been favorites of mine. I even bought it.

I have a question, though. What's the deal with the guy who lights a cigarette and then gets stabbed to death? Who is he? Where did he come from? Why is he stabbed? He dies only a few feet from the camp, yet no one seems too find his body...ever! Did I miss something? Is the American version edited, leaving out key elements of the story? I'm just curious.
