Is Satan supposed to be male or female?

I don't think Satan's gender was ever explicitly mentioned in the movie--is "he" male or female? I wasn't sure if the character was meant to be Saddam Hussein's gay lover or if Satan was actually being portrayed as female in this. The character certainly looked and sounded male but the Hussein character makes a couple of references to Satan ("Who am I going to pretend you are--Liza Minnelli?" and others) that would make me think the character is supposed to be a woman. Any thoughts?
