Just watched this yesterday...

I just watched this film yesterday, and I'm a little disappointed that there's no message board for this movie. I found it very intriguing and thought provoking. I was shocked by how the movie really sucked me in. I went into the movie expecting to find...well, I'm not sure what, but I didn't expect that I would have a positive reaction the the subject matter. If anyone else has seen this movie, I'd love to discuss it here on the boards.

I had this movie sitting on my hard drive and I didn't expect much of it, but I also thought it was very good. I think what we are seeing is sort of a very early days raw therapy that needs to be developed. Clearly there are benefits. Kipper could barely touch a woman at the beginning, but he was getting really into it by the end. He seemed almost autistic at first. But also there are serious problems with the therapy that the documentary doesn't shy away from. Like how the old guy falls in love with her, but she has to end it. Also I was never really convinced the old guy had any sexual problems. It seemed to me he was just looking for sex and love with someone that was young and beautiful. I think that is why she always looked kind of disgusted when she was with him. I think she knew that his need for "therapy" was somewhat suspect.

Both of the clients had a lot of trouble letting go, and that must be something that needs to be worked out for the therapy to work in the future. You still have to kind of ask yourself if a "Girl Friend Experience" type of prostitute would have given these guys the same experience. And if so, is she's just providing nurturing, or if this is something that requires true expertise.

I think some guys truly need help with intimacy, but therapies shouldn't be so hurtful to clients and the therapists, as is apparent from this documentary.

He clearly had sexual problems. He was bad at touching a woman, and he prematurely ejaculated. The women he had previously had sex with had all complained. Yes, there might have been an element of looking for sex and love with an attractive younger woman, but he clearly needed someone to show an old dog some new tricks. I think she was more "disgusted" by his personality and perhaps looks than by his need for therapy, or lack thereof. It's not up to her to decide who needs and doesn't need therapy anyway, she's not a therapist herself. Her job is to work with these men in addition to the therapist in areas in which it would be unethical or impractical for the therapist to do it themselves.

This film sucked me in as well. I actually wished it had been longer. It would also be neat if there were an update about what happened to all these people.

I'm curious as to what a person's credentials have to be to become a certified sex surrogate.

I would have liked to have seen more about what made Maureen tick.

You bring up a great point, Bearded!

I was also curious about how one would go about getting credentialed to be a sex surrogate.

It was also especially interesting that she worked with actual therapists who would refer her patients. Obviously, other trained profressionals (some anyway) believe in the practice.

I had never heard of anything like this before watching this movie.

I really liked this movie too. I watched it recently about a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed the relationship that the therapist had with her client. It seemed as time passed the patients became more and more open to try new things with the sex surrogate. It was a very interesting movie to me. I have not really seen anything like it before.

I just watched this myself. I had no idea what to expect going into this documentary but I was blown away by it. It was incredibly well done. It would be interesting to know what the three principals are up to today as Maureen and Kipper would be in middle age by now while John would be in his early 70s.

I thought the topic was super interesting, but it wasn't a very well made film. There are still a lot of issues that needed to be discussed, and yet it's only a 75 minute movie with shots that go on too long anyway. The editing, which is the most important part of a documentary, was pretty sub par.

I almost wish Kirby Dick had made this movie later when he had honed his skills a bit further. But the whole business is a product of it's time, so I know that wouldn't work. But man, very interesting topic!
