Petition for movie

I would have put this with my other post about a Myst movie, but for the sake of getting maxi readership I'll make it its own post. A-hem...

I just (I mean just) finished making a petition for a Myst movie over at www.petitiononline. com. If you would like to support the noble cause of getting a movie of Myst made, click on the URL below and sign the petition.

Consider it signed, trouble is it looks like I'm the only one who has signed it.

Yeah, well, it's brand new, hopefully it'll get more...but I hate to be too optimistic.

hmmm....good point you have there...hadn't really considered that. Sirrus/Achenar slash!!! argh, the mental images, noooo! But yeah, considering all the stuff that HP and LOTR spawned, I wouldn't be surprised :oP

I've just signed the petition, but I had a question. How many signatures do you need before you will send it to Cyan?

If we make a Myst movie, and we base it on the games, then we'd have to find someone to play the Stranger. Girls like to pretend the Stranger is a girl, and guys like to pretend the Stranger is a guy. That way, they can imagine themselves as the Stranger. Like some people have suggested, we could make a movie based on the books, or we could try something totally different. It might be cool to have a movie showing what happened before Myst came out. What Sirrus and Achenar did, and what happened in some of the ages they were in.

You remember that sequence in the Doom movie, where you see it from a first person view, yeah, you could do Myst like that, that way everyone still has their respective images of 'The Stranger'. The beginning sequence could be The Stranger falling into Myst Island, but with no details shown so that we still don't know his/her features or even gender. Then the movie hits us with the first person view as the story begins.

reply

no no no...absolutely not. the movie would never work unless it was based on the books. the game is a game, not enough story content for a movie, leaves way to much leeway for hollywood to butcher it.

NO! No one shal make a myst movie! Because I will make one after I get out of film school! So ha! ha ha ha!

reply

Yeah... because if you want to learn how to make a film, the best place is a film school.

Film is art. And film school teaches mechanics and attempts to teach style, something that cannot be taught.

You want to learn how to make a film... go make a film. Get your finances together, get a script, a cast and a crew, and go make a film. Cause the best way to learn is to put a camera in your hand and shoot something (coincidentally that's the best way to learn how to use a firearm).

A myst movie would never work. It's a puzzle game, and there aren't enough charactures

reply

It could work.

The puzzles would have to be part of the story line, and I mean the MAIN story line, not some off the track story line or one of it's own. Or better yet, the whole movie a puzzle.

i will not sign the petition because although i do want a myst movie. stephen spielberg shouldn't direct this nor should james cameron. although they've done some really impressive directing, i don't think they completely understand and/or appreciate myst enough to do this film and theres a very likely chance that they'll trash it and turn it into just another hollywood "blockbuster" and i think foreseeing it, it probably won't go down too well with the public because the base reason spielberg and cameron was contending for the rights was because of the success of such a big production fantasy film of the lotr and they saw the "potential" of myst. so they weren't respecting this game for what it was but an opportunity to make it "big" and financially rewarding.

take silent hill for example, it was directed by christopher gans who, if you read the trivia on its imdb profile, was given the rights because he held the game to him very dearly and was only given the rights after he sent konami a video displayin how much silent hill meant to him. and althought it didn't receive any critical acclaim, i don't think any other director would have done even remotely a better job to the best of their ability than christopher gans did. the visuals and soundeffects and monster was incredibly faithful to the game without superfluous special effects or camera work that didn't need to be there.

i think if spielberg or cameron did this film it would end up in a waste bin like all the other game turned movies. plus another thing is because myst and its series has quite a "weak" story in that the story itself is somewhat cliched and its more of a case of what you DON'T know that makes the game interesting when you play. its the puzzles and ambience and the complete lack of identity of you, the first persons play. these qualities makes the script probably hard to write and can be screwed up really easily if the writer/director is not sensitive to tspects. we've kind of already seen a preview of that happening in revelation where theyve made the music so much more hollywood style and the ending and "revelations" was less emotionally gratifying than in exile.

i think the myst stories wouldn't hurt to be changed in some parts unlike some games where nothing needs to be changed but they always do. its just a matter of stringing the scenes and concepts and events together in an intelligent and sensible manner. like maybe change it a bit, but changing it for the better and still sticking to the overall "mold" of the stories with maybe a few more pleasant and climatic surprises and not changin it to suit convenience.

this is a really good game and deserves a really good movie to go with it. please don't let them screw this up. maybe change your petition a little bit? maybe among myst fans the prefered director hasn't been discussed enough, give a little more choice for the fans? but i definately agree that rand miller should oversee the project if it is ever done. :)
